Church History
Mt. Sinai was established 145 years ago. Before 1869, former slaves and descendants of slaves from “The Heart of the Foothills” in South Carolina worshiped at the Reedy River Baptist Church. Seeking their identity, the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church was organized in 1869 by Eli Moore. Mr. Thomas W. Roe a member of Reedy River Church donated land to Mt. Sinai for the first church.
The first church was a one room log house and was used for church services and school. Later in 1913, Mr. Foster Keith dug the first grave. Prior to this many former slaves or descendants of slaves were buried at Reedy River Baptist Church. In the early 1900’s the second church was built. At that time baptisms were performed in a creek located across the street from the church, and in 1923 Mr. William Brockman built the first baptismal pool.
Around the year 1935, Mr. Mack McKinney built the third church and the building was repaired several times. In 1962, the fourth church was built with indoor bathrooms, a baptismal pool and central heat. In 1985, the building was expanded to include additional Sunday School classrooms.
